Acorn Squash

Maurice turned to Marci and scratched his head.

“Hey, why’s it called an acorn squash?”

“Huh?” Marci said.

“Acorn squash. Why’s it called an acorn squash? Do squirrels store their acorns in it or something?”

“I expect it’s more to do with the shape of it.”

“What, you mean round and volleyball-like? Shouldn’t it then be a volleyball squash?”

“Most are kind of round with a point, like an acorn.”

“Really? I see them in all shapes. Mostly kind of round and squished.”

“Oh!” Marci said, her face brightening. “Well, there you go then.”

“Huh?” Maurice furrowed his brow.

“It’s like an acorn, or it’s like an acorn that’s been squashed. Acorn squash!”

“Hmm, I dunno Marci…”

“Yup, that’s how it is. Mystery solved.”

“I suppose. Alright, you win this one.”

“You’re right I do…though I didn’t know we were competing.”

“Few ever do.” Maurice said with a mischievous grin.
